Bhimashankar is a sacred Hindu site in the Sahyadri mountain range of Maharashtra, India. It is home to the Bhimashankar Temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines dedicated to Shiva. The temple is located atop a hill at an elevation of 3,892 feet (1,188 meters), surrounded by dense forests.
Bhimashankar is believed to be where Shiva defeated the demon Bhima. According to legend, Bhima had been terrorizing the local people and was finally defeated by Shiva. The temple complex includes several smaller shrines and temples dedicated to Kamalaja, Hanuman, and Shakti.
The area around Bhimashankar is rich in biodiversity and is home to several rare species of plants and animals. The Forest Research Institute (FRI) has identified over 1,200 species of flora and fauna in the area. The forests here are also a source of medicinal herbs used in Ayurvedic medicine.
Bhimashankar receives heavy rainfall during the monsoon season (July-August). Due to its high elevation, the temperatures here are cooler than at lower elevations. Winter temperatures can dip below freezing point at night.
