Chembra Peak
Elevated at 2100 m above sea level, Chembra Peak (Chembra Mala) is a mountain in the Indian state of Kerala, the highest peak of the Wayanad Hills and one of the highest peaks of the Western Ghats, adjacent to the Nilgiri and Vellarimala Hills.
Kerala state, close to Meppadi town and 8 km south of Kalpetta. Chembra Peak is a quaint location offering magnificent views of the region's remarkable flora and fauna. The Forest Department protects it and has maintained its originality over the years. This is the perfect tourist spot if you want to stroll through nature. According to belief, the goddess Sita bathed in Chembra Peak Lake, and it is told that this lake has never dried up.
Walking through mist-filled tea plantations is one of the most amazing hiking experiences. On an overcast day, you may find yourself among the clouds. The Forest Department organizes the Chembra Peak Hike, which takes you through eternal forests, waterfalls, and lush greenery to a heart-shaped lake that will capture your heart at first sight.

Chembra Peak:
Begin your journey by trekking to the top of Chembra Peak itself. The trek is moderately challenging and takes you through lush green forests, meadows, and rocky terrains. Once you reach the summit, you'll be rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the surrounding hills and the heart-shaped Chembra Lake.
Heart-shaped Chembra Lake:
Located near the Chembra Peak, this heart-shaped lake is a major highlight of the region. The lake is believed to have never dried up and is a picturesque spot to enjoy the serene beauty of nature. However, note that access to the lake requires prior permission from the forest department.
Soochipara Waterfalls:
Situated around 20 kilometres from Chembra Peak, Soochipara Waterfalls is a magnificent waterfall nestled amidst dense forests. The cascading waterfalls, surrounded by lush greenery, offer a refreshing experience. You can dip in the natural pool at the base of the falls or enjoy a leisurely picnic amidst nature.
Pookode Lake:
Approximately 20 kilometres from Chembra Peak, Pookode Lake, is a natural freshwater lake surrounded by lush green forests. The lake is famous for its serene ambience and scenic beauty. You can go boating, walk along the lakeside, and spot various species of birds and butterflies nearby.
Edakkal Caves:
Situated around 30 kilometres from Chembra Peak, the Edakkal Caves are ancient rock formations known for their prehistoric cave paintings. These caves provide insights into the historical and cultural significance of the region. Explore the caves and marvel at the ancient artwork depicting human and animal figures.
Banasura Sagar Dam:
Located approximately 40 kilometres from Chembra Peak, Banasura Sagar Dam is the largest earthen dam in India. The dam is built across the Karamanathodu River and offers scenic views of the reservoir and surrounding hills. You can enjoy boating on the reservoir or relax amidst the tranquil atmosphere.
Meenmutty Waterfalls:
Situated around 45 kilometres from Chembra Peak, Meenmutty Waterfalls is a spectacular waterfall cascading through three tiers. Dense forests surround it and offer a serene and picturesque setting. Things To Do At Chembra Peak :
Photography -
For photographers, this is paradise. From the top of Chembra Peak, you are surrounded by spectacular views. On the way to the hike, you will come across a green tea farm and a spice farm. And when you reach the top, you can see all the lush green land. The hike ends at a beautiful heart-shaped lake called Cupid Lake—the perfect spot to enjoy the moment with your camera.
Chembra's Heart Peak Lake Trekking -
Vana Samrakshana Samiti (VSS) is part of the Forest Department and organizes day trips to the lake. The administration is under the control of the Wayanad District Tourism Promotion Commission (DTPC). A guide will be provided to accompany you during the hike.
The trek begins at the ticket counter itself, even though the starting point for the same is at the watchtower, which is about a kilometre far. Jeeps are also available from the ticket office to take you to the starting point of the Chembra Peak hike, or you can drive up to the parking spot near the tower. A permit from the Forest Department is required to begin the trek. Only 200 people per day can enter Peak Chembra on a first-come, first-served basis.
