Sri Mahadeva Temple
The Mahadeva Temple, built in the twelfth century, is inside the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. This is near the village of Tambdi Surla. The Mahadeva temple of Tambdi Surla is the oldest temple of Goa that survived the Portuguese because it became set next to a stream in the middle of the small clearing, hidden inside the dense jungle. The temple was built by Kadamba Queen Kamladevi. Most of the historic temples in Goa have been destroyed either using Mughal rulers or by the Portuguese. The carvings of Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Brahma with their respective consorts are visible on the panel at the perimeters of the temple.
The pillared corridor is included with the simple grey sloping slab. The Garbhagriha is surrounded by three worn-out towers, of which the top is incomplete. There is Lord Shiva Deity inside the internal sanctum with Linga. A headless Nandi within the mandap is a common feature of Shiva temples. There is a river flowing simply in front of the temple known as River Surla, which additionally provides the beauty of the temple.
