Bhamer Fort, also known as Bhimagad Fort, is a major fort in the Satara district of Maharashtra. It is situated at an altitude of 3600 feet, atop a hill near the village of Bhamer in Rajgad taluk. It was constructed by the Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1673 and was used as a strategic military stronghold during the Maratha Empire.
The fort is surrounded by steep rock faces on three sides and a deep valley on the fourth side. The defence has several bastions, watch towers and gates. The entrance gate, the Mahadarwaja, is elaborately carved with images of the Maratha warriors. Inside the fort walls are several temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Bhavani and a palace. The fort also has a secret escape route, known as the Bham Chhatri, which leads to the nearby fortress of Rajgad.
The fort offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and is a popular destination for trekking, rock climbing and bird watching. Tourists can also visit Patan and Mhaswad, known for their rural beauty and traditional culture.
