Arulmigu Subramanyar Thirukoil, also known as the Swamimalai Murugan Temple, is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Murugan located in the town of Swamimalai in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is one of the six important abodes of Lord Murugan, also known as Shanmuga, and is considered the first of them. The temple is situated atop a small hillock, which is believed to be the manifestation of the primordial cosmic hill known as the Meru.
The temple is famous for its grandeur and is considered one of the finest examples of South Indian temple architecture. The temple's main entrance is through a massive gopuram, about 42 meters high, with eleven tiers. The gopuram is adorned with intricate carvings of gods, goddesses, and other mythical creatures.
The main sanctum of the temple houses the idol of Lord Murugan, who is depicted with six faces, known as Shanmuga. The model comprises five metals believed to possess significant medicinal properties. The temple also houses shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, Ganesh, and Goddess Parvati.
One of the unique features of this temple is that it is believed to be where Lord Murugan taught his father, Lord Shiva, the meaning of the Pranava mantra, "Om". This incident is known as the "Gnana Sabhai" or "Sabha of Wisdom" and is depicted in a sculpture inside the temple.
The temple is also famous for its annual festival, celebrated during the Tamil month of Vaikasi (May-June). The festival, known as the "Skanda Sashti", commemorates the victory of Lord Murugan over the demon Surapadman. The festival attracts many devotees from all over India and is a major tourist attraction.
