Baba Harbhajan Singh Memorial Temple, also known as Baba Mandir, is a revered pilgrimage site in the eastern Indian state of Sikkim. This temple is dedicated to the memory of Baba Harbhajan Singh, who was a soldier in the Indian Army and is believed to have attained martyrdom in 1968.
The temple is situated at an altitude of 13,123 feet, between the Nathu La Pass and the Jelep La Pass, two of the highest motorable roads in the world. The location offers panoramic views of the snow-capped Himalayan mountains and the surrounding valleys. The temple complex includes a shrine, a meditation hall, and a small museum that houses photographs and artefacts related to Baba Harbhajan Singh.
Baba Harbhajan Singh was stationed in the area during the Sino-Indian War in 1962. In 1968, he disappeared while on patrol and was believed to have drowned in a nearby river. However, his body was found three days later, mysteriously intact and without any signs of decomposition, which led to the belief that he had become a saint. Since then, his spirit is believed to have protected the soldiers posted in the area, and he is considered the "Hero of Nathula."
The temple is visited by thousands of devotees every year, who come to pay their respects to the revered soldier-saint. The temple is especially crowded during the annual Baba Harbhajan Singh Memorial Day, celebrated on September 11th every year. A flag-hoisting ceremony is held during the festival, and a feast is organized for the devotees.
Baba Harbhajan Singh Memorial Temple can also enjoy the natural beauty of the surrounding area, which includes scenic mountain trails, waterfalls, and lakes. The temple is located around 50 km from the capital city of Gangtok and can be reached by car or bus.
