Pondicherry, or Puducherry, is the Union Territory of India, one of the great cities whose roots lay deep in many historical events before India's Independence. Pondicherry is now the main tourist attraction in India's Southeast area near the Bay of Bengal, sharing a border with the State of Tamilnadu. From calm backwaters to Breathtaking beaches, and water sports to sightseeing tours, Pondicherry held various attractions for tourists from India and worldwide. Along with these, Pondicherry houses one of India's oldest and largest spiritual Ashrams, Sri Aurobindo Ashram.
Sri Aurobindo or Aurobindo Ghosh established Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry. Sri Aurobindo was a political leader and Nationalist before he retired from it and became Spiritual Guru to a few followers called Sadhaks in 1910. Till 1920 Sri Aurobindo lived with a few Sadhaks in Pondicherry, doing their daily chores and reading and writing with simplicity. The Mother of Mirra Alfassa, a French woman who was said to be "the Spiritual collaborator" of Sri Aurobindo, returned to Pondicherry and started living in Ashram, following the lifestyle of Sadhaks. Sri Aurobindo handed over the whole responsibility to the Mother and left to follow the path of spirituality after significant spiritual realization on 24th November 1926, also recognized as the founding day of the Ashram.
The Mother continued the work of Sri Aurobindo even after he died in 1950. With only a few Sadhaks earlier, Ashram grew more and more from 150 to 2000 Sadhaks Community in the present day, after the formal foundation of the Ashram. The Ashram has over 400 buildings in Pondicherry, where different departments are formed. Sadhaks perform other duties in departments as their Sadhana. Ashram smoothly flowed under the trust board of five trustees and was created in 1955 by Mother herself. And after the death of the Mother by consensus of the Trustees in 1973. For Ashram's function smoothly, very few rules were laid by The Mother and Sri Aurobindo. Complete Prohibition of drugs, sex, alcohol, and politics was one of Aurobindo Ashram Pondicherry's main rules.
Sri Aurobindo Ashram Puducherry is open to all without distinction of nationality, gender, religion, caste, or age from different parts of the world. Many devotees mostly visit the Main Building of the Ashram daily to take blessings. In the courtyard, the Samadhis ( Physical remains of dead people) of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother lie covered in flowers.
