The Vijaydurg Fort is a testament to the Marathas' naval prowess. It is located 500 kilometres south of Mumbai on Maharashtra's western coast. The fort inspired the name of a village near the Vijaydurg Fort. Vijaydurg was previously known as 'Gheria' due to its proximity to the sea on three sides.
It was renamed Vijaydurg after Maratha King Shivaji conquered it from Adilshah of Bijapur in 1653. Vijay stands for 'victory,' so it is known as the 'fort of victory.' Shivaji built the 17-acre fort as an important base for harbouring and repairing Maratha warships.
The Vijaydurg Fort is located at the mouth of the Vaghotan River, which separates the districts of Sindhudurg. Because of its fine architecture, it is the largest fort on the coast and stands mighty. The fortress was virtually impregnable due to the 40 km shallow creek as a natural barrier around it. The shallow stream made approaching the fort impossible for large enemy ships. Cannonball marks can still be seen on the fort walls.
The fort is made of laterite stones. A 10 m high compound wall, about 300 ft away from the defence deep in the sea, served as a defence against attacking ships. Ships collided with the wall and sank. The reason also has a 200-meter-long tunnel for emergency evacuation.
These characteristics of the fort make it highly admirable. Because of its commanding presence, the fort was also known as the "Eastern Gibraltar."
Maharashtra's forts have a special allure for history buffs from India. The magnificent Vijaydurg Fort is one of many such structures that dot the coastal state. The defence on the Sindhudurg coast has recently fallen into dangerous disrepair. However, its intimate connection to Maratha history makes it worthwhile to visit.
