Kolaba Fort
Kolaba Fort, also known as Alibag Fort, is one of the most important tourist attractions in Alibaug. It is located in the middle of the sea and is surrounded by Arabian Sea waters on all sides. It is a 300-year-old fort once a major naval station during Shivaji Maharaj's reign in Maharashtra. This isolated military fortification in the Arabian Sea is a sight to behold. It is less than 2 kilometres from Alibaug Beach and can be reached on foot during low tides, but a boat must be hired during high tides. The walk is peaceful and scenic because the area is sparsely populated, with only a few beachgoers sprinkled throughout.
The fort's interior is dotted with historical artefacts and relics, such as cannons and animal and bird carvings on the fort walls. There are also some old temple structures here. Despite its location in the middle of the sea, surrounded by water on all four sides, a freshwater well within the fort grounds is an important feature. A temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha, built by Raghoji Angre in 1759, is also on the premises and is still worshipped by local fishermen.
As one of Maharashtra's most prominent forts, its strategic location aided its operation as a major naval station and a stronghold for launching attacks on British troops. The opulent fort is now a popular tourist destination and the town's main attraction. Due to its historical significance, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has designated the Kolaba Fort as a nationally protected monument.
Kolaba Fort's Architecture:
The fort's construction is a work of art in and of itself. It has two entrances in the Arabian Sea. One door leads into the sea, while another leads to the shores of Alibag. The fort's average height is 25 feet. The most intriguing feature of the regal fort is its freshwater wells, which provide fresh water even through thobeingthe middle of the sea. Several temples are dedicated to Hindu Gods within the Kolaba fort grounds that are now used by local temples to offer prayers and celebrate festivals.
Kolaba Fort's History:
For hundreds of years, the Kolaba Fort protected and fortified the armies of the Shivaji empire and the Portuguese and the East India Company. This was one of many forts captured by Shivaji Maharaj's army in the 17th century, and the Alibaug Fort is said to have been his final construction project before his death.
After Shivaji Maharaj's untimely death in 1680, his prodigal son, Sambhaji Maharaja, completed its reinforcement. Darya Sagar and Manik Bhandari, two sardars of Shivaji Maharaja's army, were given command of the fort until Kanhoji Angre, the admiral of the Maratha navy, took power in 1713 until he died in 1729. The Maratha Navy occasionally raided British ships and looted their possessions during these years.
The most notable battle fought here was in 1721 when the British and Portuguese armies conspired to attack Kolaba but were unsuccessful for various reasons. The Kolaba Fort once housed gardens, stables, treasuries, and other structures, most of which were exhumed and destroyed in fires.

The pleasant sea breeze, combined with the fort's history, enchants your senses. The builders' architectural brilliance in erecting such an imposing structure (25 feet) on such a small rock face is a testament to exceptional craftsmanship and engineering.
Carvings of elephants, peacocks, and tigers depict centuries of history on the fort walls. Some old cannons used to attack enemies during battles can still be found in the fortification. Surprisingly, despite being in the middle of the sea, there is a freshwater well here!
