Rangdum Monastery

Rangdum Monastery is an ancient Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the remote Rangdum village in the Suru Valley of Ladakh, India. Situated at 4,031 meters above sea level, the monastery is one of the region's most isolated and secluded monasteries. It is surrounded by the majestic Zanskar mountain range, making the sanctuary a perfect destination for trekking enthusiasts and adventure seekers.

The Rangdum Monastery is believed to have been built in the 18th century by a Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. The monastery complex is surrounded by several small chortens (stupas) and meditation caves, which the monks use for solitary retreats.

The monastery houses several ancient Buddhist relics, including a 7-meter-high statue of Maitreya Buddha, which is believed to have been sculpted by Rinchen Zangpo, a famous Buddhist master and translator from Tibet. The monks of Rangdum Monastery belong to the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism and follow a strict daily routine that includes meditation, chanting, and puja (worship). They also perform several traditional rituals and ceremonies throughout the year, including the annual Mask Dance festival, held during the summer months, attracting visitors worldwide.

Best Time To Visit Rangdum Monastery:

The best time to visit Rangdum Monastery is from June to September when the weather is pleasant and the road to the monastery is open. However, reaching the monastery can be challenging due to its location. The nearest town to Rangdum is Kargil, about 130 km away, and visitors can hire a taxi or take a local bus from Kargil to reach the monastery.
