Diskit Gompa

Diskit Gompa, or Diskit Monastery, is a beautiful and historic Buddhist monastery in the Nubra Valley of Ladakh, India. It is one of the region's oldest and largest monasteries and a popular tourist attraction. The sanctuary is situated at an altitude of 10,310 feet and is surrounded by stunning and rugged Himalayan mountains.

Diskit Gompa was founded in the 14th century by Changzem Tserab Zangpo, a disciple of the famous Tibetan teacher Tsongkhapa. The monastery is home to around 100 monks who live and study here. It is affiliated with the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism, which Tsongkhapa founded.

Diskit Gompa is the statue of Maitreya Buddha, which stands at an impressive height of 106 feet. The statue was built in 2010 and is the tallest statue of Maitreya Buddha in the world. It can be seen from miles away and is a sight to behold.

Diskit Gompa is the ancient prayer wheel, which is said to have been brought to the monastery from Tibet in the 15th century. The prayer wheel is made of copper and is covered with inscriptions of the mantra, "Om Mani Padme Hum." Devotees spin the wheel to gain merit and good karma.

The monastery is also home to a collection of ancient Buddhist scriptures and manuscripts, some dating back several centuries. These texts are written in Tibetan and contain valuable insights into Buddhist philosophy and practice.

Diskit Gompa can also participate in the daily prayer ceremonies held by the monks. These ceremonies involve chanting, drumming, and using various musical instruments. They provide a unique opportunity to experience Ladakh's rich and vibrant culture.
