Bavikonda Ancient Buddhist Monastery

Bavikonda is a renowned Buddhist site located about 16 km from Visakhapatnam in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The name Bavikonda means "Hill of Wells" in Telugu, and the place gets its name from the numerous wells found here. The ancient Buddhist monastery at Bavikonda dates back to the 3rd century BCE and is a significant centre of Buddhist art and culture.

The monastery complex at Bavikonda covers an area of about 40 acres and comprises a group of about 26 structures, including meditation halls, stupas, and chaityas (prayer halls). The site was excavated in the early 1900s, and several artefacts, including statues of the Buddha, terracotta figurines, and pottery, were discovered.

The highlight of Bavikonda is the Mahastupa, which stands at the height of about 16 meters and is the largest stupa at the site. The Mahastupa is surrounded by a circular path believed to have been used by monks for circumambulation.
